THE STORY BEHIND THE WRITING OF BLAIRE'S BRIDGE Mark says the story idea began after talking with a stranger on an airline flight as he returned home from a speaking engagement on the West Coast. "The seasoned citizen beside me seemed lonely and struck up a conversation on the flight," Mark said. "He was going home after visiting with his daughter and brand new grandson. "He told me his wife had died about two years ago and his daughter had moved to San Francisco after she was inspired by the story of how he and her mom had fallen in love. They both loved bridges and met at the Golden Gate Bridge while they were seeing it for the first time. He had built bridges for a state transportation department in the South and she just liked bridges. "I was impressed by how much he loved talking about his late wife. The memories seemed to flood him with happiness. His reminiscing of meeting his wife at the Golden Gate Bridge was very brief, but on the drive home from the airport I began to imagine a couple who had met at a bridge. I combined that story with my own interest in covered bridges and, along with the history behind a specific covered bridge that once existed not far from my home in Clayton, the story just grew from there." "My only regret in writing Blaire's Bridge is that I did not learn where the man on the plane lived or how to contact him to tell him how his story inspired this one," Mark added. "I hope he will find out about the book and contact me so I can thank him."
